Genovese Drug Store:
Brooklyn, New York
When Genovese Drug Stores proposed a new white box more appropriate for the suburbs than the streets of Brooklyn, the residents of the tight knit community of Carroll Gardens were greatly alarmed.
Community activists bonded together with three local architects, including Martin Brandwein, to draft an alternative vision of what the new drug store should look like. Mr. Brandwein designed several alternate facades.
As a result of the community’s efforts and strong design proposals, the developer of the drug store incorporated many of their ideas. Ultimately, the community was very pleased with the results.
