47-51 Bergen Street:
Brooklyn, New York

A developer retained Martin Brandwein Architect (MBA) to adapt two late-19th-century adjoining factory buildings for new uses while still retaining their historic character.  MBA studied the buildings’ relationship to the street and produced several alternative sketches.

The proposals provided a new entry for upper-floor residential units, linking the two buildings.  New ground level openings, using architectural elements consistent with the industrial character of the buildings, made for a much more pedestrian-friendly streetscape.
